Septet in E flat major Op 20
Described by the Sunday Times as “chamber music royalty”, and with a vast and varied repertoire, the Nash Ensemble has long been a firm Mozartfest favourite. Here the Nash will perform music from Benjamin Britten to Beethoven, with Mozart between. Britten’s 3 Divertimenti for String Quartet are three individual character pieces, effervescent, accessible and appealing. Mozart’s Clarinet Quintet in A major K 581, Mozart’s only finished work for that instrument, needs no introduction, nor does clarinettist Richard Hosford. Tonight’s programme is completed by Beethoven’s Septet in E flat major Op 20 in which the youthful composer took up and extended the 18th century tradition of the divertimento in a work which became one of his most successful and enduringly popular.
