Mozart – String Quartet in G major K 387
Shostakovich – String Quartet No 4 in D major Op 83
Brahms – String Quartet in A minor Op 51 No 2
The Takács Quartet, founded in Hungary but now based in Boulder, Colorado, returns to Bath with its newly installed American second violinist. The Quartet’s players were recently praised by the Boston Globe for performances that reflected “a deeply moving sense of dedication to exploring the mysteries of the extraordinary quartet literature and presenting their findings in such vibrant three-dimensional life”. Their explorations tonight embrace Mozart, in the first of the six quartets he dedicated to his friend Haydn, Shostakovich, in a 1949 essay in Russian and Jewish folk idioms, and Brahms, in his relaxed and colourful Second Quartet.
