Agnus from Missa Brevis
This glorious concert of Renaissance music is based on the works of musicians who worked for the Sistine Chapel Choir, some little known as the music was jealously guarded by the Popes. Unsurprisingly Allegri’s famous Miserere lies at its heart, surrounded by a selection of works by Giovanni Pierluigi de Palestrina plus motets by Cristobal de Morales, Costanzo Festa, Josquin des Prez and Elzéar Genet (better known as Carpentras after his home town). Carpentras had two stints working in the Papal Chapel, and when he returned for his second he found that his music was still being performed but in ‘bastardised versions’ so corrupted as to be barely recognisable – so he promptly published his work. Allegri’s Miserere has also been much altered over the centuries and the original almost certainly did not include the now famous Top C. The divine voices of the peerless Tallis Scholars promise a fascinating and thrilling concert.
