The Schumann Quartet will open Bath Mozartfest with their debut performance in the City, playing Mozart’s music. String Quartet No 15 K 421 was dedicated to Haydn, Mozart’s friend, colleague and mentor. This intense work, full of emotional depth, is a perfect vehicle for the sensitive and empathetic playing of the quartet, which comprises the three Schumann brothers plus violist Veit Hertenstein. Having formed in 2007, and studied with the Alban Berg Quartet, the group has won many plaudits. In tonight’s programme the Mozart will be followed by the fourth of Haydn’s six Sun quartets, then Beethoven’s final completed work, String Quartet No 16, beloved for its remarkable variety of detail and subtlety of harmony.
