The internationally acclaimed, Barcelona-based Cuarteto Casals is a firm favourite at Bath Mozartfest and we are delighted that they are opening this year’s festival with, of course, the music of Mozart. ‘Spring’, String Quartet No 14 in G major,  was written during Mozart’s early years in Vienna and is the first of six string quartets dedicated to Haydn, who Mozart believed had elevated the genre to an art form.  Haydn’s following String Quartet in A major  Op 20 No 6 clearly illustrates this.  Brahms also regarded the string quartet as important but only completed three.  His A minor Op 51 is beautifully lyrical, yet with an underlying tension which finally explodes into a wildly exuberant flashing Hungarian dance.  A wonderful start to Bath Mozartfest 2023.
