Hungarian Rhapsody No 9 in E flat major Pesther Carneval
The award-winning British-Ukrainian pianist is familiar to Bath audiences from his appearances with Nicola Benedetti and Leonard Elschenbroich, but here takes to the stage alone. Two Mozart works, Fantasia in C minor K 475 and Sonata in F major K 533/K 494, will open his programme and then to Mendelssohn’s lyrical but technically challenging Variation Sérieuses in D minor Op 54, concluding with fabulous musical fireworks in the form of Liszt’s Hungarian Rhapsody No 9 in E flat major with its increasingly virtuosic folksong melodies and swirling dances. The piece’s nickname, Pesther Carneval, refers to the eastern part of Hungary’s capital city.
